Steven Kennedy
Steven Kennedy is a self taught artist, born and raised in a small, industrial, fishing port, in the North East of England.
From his early teenage years, within his circle of friends, Steven would seek escapism through the use of soft recreational drugs. This trend would continue well into his adult life, always looking for the next mind altering substance(s).
In 1997 he would try Heroin and, subsequently, began a seventeen year journey with it. Initially, he would use sporadically, before eventually succumbing to an eight year addiction.
At the age of 39, an amalgamation of circumstances and a rare moment of clarity, would bring Steven to the realisation that this dire existence was no longer an option for him, and so began his road to recovery.
Now, after more than a decade of no drug use, Steven is utilising his creative skills and producing ‘ Addiction Associated Artwork ‘, mainly centred around his past Heroin addiction.
The aim of Steven’s work is, to engage; addict’s in recovery ,current users and people who fall into neither of these categories, into conversation[s] regarding the different issues each may have or face , when dealing with substance misuse.
Through these discussions, Steven hopes that we can initiate a greater knowledge and enlightenment, helping to breakdown preconceived stigmas and overcome any perceptual barriers which may have been previously formed. Therefore, creating a better understanding between one another, when relating to the subject of drug use / abuse.
“ It may not be comfortable or an enjoyable experience but with the correct support and guidance, there is a better alternative to your present existence, and it’s available.”
